Open application for a doctoral candidate in Communication and Information
The doctoral candidate position is available in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Department of Creative Communication. Applicants interested in other research topics related to open science communication are also welcome to apply.
Research topic description
The move towards more openness in science is engraved in the strategic EU documents shaping the landscape of Research & Innovation. Together with this, we can notice the growth of research studies on Open Science (OS) practices and applicability. However, the growing research field neglects the issue of Open Science applicability in countries where the collaboration between science and society has limited traditions and civic participation in public activities is not mature. An example of such countries in the EU context is the Widening Countries. Disparities in Research and Innovation performance among Member States is a well-recognized issue and the EU aims to address it through increased investments. In terms of Open Science, the EU can and is drafting policies eliminating the legal barriers to accessing and sharing information and funding data-intensive, cost-demanding infrastructures. The political pressures and available funding will sooner or later lead to more integration of Widening countries into the openness structures. However, the ‘softer’ approaches to Open Science such as citizen science, science communication, and co-creation with stakeholders are much harder to implement through top-down policy initiatives because they require a change in the ways researchers think, research is conducted (researchers need to adapt) and governed (research institutions need to adapt). Hence, we need to understand the drivers and barriers of Open Science application in such countries and consider bottom-up approaches (e.g. Citizen Science projects, intensified science communication efforts, participatory research). To address the discussed gaps, the research project should aim to develop a research-based methodology for the evaluation and management of the Open Science application for knowledge co-creation processes in countries where stakeholder participation in civic activities is not mature.
The selected candidate will work on the PhD thesis under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr Monika Mačiulienė. The successful applicant will have to attend scientific conferences, meetings and internships in the other universities.

Programme structure
The PhD programme consists of:
· Independent research under supervision;
· Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits);
· Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions;
· Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is related to the PhD topic when possible;
· The completion of a PhD thesis.
